James Monroe MemorandumManuscript Collection: MC178
Creator SketchJames Monroe, born in 1758, was a lawyer and a politician who was the fifth president of the United States of America. Monroe was twice governor of Virginia, held various diplomatic posts, and served under Madison as secretary of state and as secretary of war before his election as president in 1817. His presidency was dubbed the "Era of Good Feeling" but had its strenuous moments as well. During his presidency, he oversaw the Missouri Compromise and the Monroe Doctrine in 1823. He was married to Elizabeth Kortright in 1786 and together they had two daughters. Monroe died in 1831 in New York City. His remains are buried in Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe James Monroe Memorandum and associated papers relate to handwritten notes by outgoing U.S. President James Monroe concerning political appointments of the newly-elected John Quincy Adams. Printed documents are two reprints of "Monroe on the Adams-Clay 'Bargain'" from The American Historical Review, Volume XLII, No. 2, dated January, 1937. This article includes the printing of President Monroe's memorandum in full with comments by Barnes F. Lathrop. The creative work is the autograph memorandum of President James Monroe, concerning the circumstances of the presidential election of 1825 and the choice of Henry Clay as secretary of state. Of interest is the provenance of the memorandum which was taken by Brigadier General Claudius W. Sears, of the Confederate Army, from one of his men during the Civil War. General Sears was the husband of Susan Alice Gray, youngest daughter of William Fairfax Gray. Additionally, an undated typed transcript of the memorandum of President James Monroe is included.
