Hyman CollectionManuscript Collection: MC173
Creator SketchLittle is known about Mr. and Mrs. Marion Hyman, the donors of the collection, who resided in Houston, Texas. They acquired the collection from a friend, Mrs. Hicks, to whom it had been given by a Mrs. Strickland from Texas. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe Hyman collection contains items dating from 1849 to 1904 including an account book, printed documents consisting of pages from books and newspapers, and a handwritten recipe for cough syrup. The account book dates from 1849 to 1869 and includes various lists of purchases by individuals on items such as sugar, ginger and molasses with quantities and costs included, as well as payment for labor on farm tasks. There are also several remedies listed for illnesses such as scarlet fever, smallpox and snake bites. Found within the account book were printed documents and a creative work. Printed documents include pages 25-64 from the Farmer's and Stockman's Hand Book, ca. 1904. These pages contain product reviews and testimonies for various Prussian products, for the care of livestock. The handbook was printed by the Prussian Remedy Company. Also included are two half pages from a book captioned "Medicines used for..." These pages include lists of medicines, their uses and suggested doses for medicines such as liquorice root and oil of turpentine. Newspaper clippings include an excerpt about treating burns and an article titled "A Cure for Hydrophobia." The creative work is a handwritten home remedy for cough syrup which includes the quantities for certain ingredients. Return to the Table of Contents
