Creator Sketch

Little is known about Charles Haynes who was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, in 1814. He served in the Texas Army with the "Buckeye Rangers" of Ohio in 1836 and was honorably discharged in 1838. He later moved to Llano County, Texas, where he worked as a blacksmith until his death in 1868.


Scope and Content Note

The Charles Haynes Papers are comprised of correspondence, a military discharge, a photograph and frame, illustrating the life and military career of this Texas veteran. Correspondence includes two handwritten letters on Rice Hotel stationery, acknowledging the gift of the photograph and military discharge of Charles Haynes, presented to the San Jacinto Museum in 1939 during the State Convention of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. The legal document is the 1838 honorable military discharge of Charles Haynes from the Republic of Texas Army. In addition, there is an undated photograph of Charles Haynes with accompanying frame.
