Jacob Garrett PapersManuscript Collection: MC165
Creator SketchJacob Garrett, early settler and political figure in Texas was born in Tennessee in 1776. He moved to Texas in 1824 and became a representative to the convention of 1832 and 1833 from the Ayish Bayou District. Garrett was one of the commissioners to raise troops in 1835 and was appointed agent to collect money due to the Mexican government and to contract loans in the name of the General Council for the use of Texans. It is notable that Garrett introduced to the council the last resolution for peace with Mexico. Garrett died about 1842 in Hot Springs, Arkansas where he is buried. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe Jacob Garrett Papers are comprised of correspondence and financial documents dated from 1836 to 1842 documenting the life of this early Texan settler and politician. Correspondence contains three letters. Two letters are addressed to Jacob Garret; one dated in 1839 concerns payment received by Mr. Garrett and another undated correspondence refers to dealings in San Augustine, Texas. An undated memo to William Garret details the division of his land by three individuals. The financial documents include: bills, promissory notes and receipts. There is an 1836 bill for Mr. Claibourn Garrett with San Augustine, Texas written at top. There is also a bill from Jacob Garrett to William Garrett in the amount of $267. Promissory notes are all made out to Jacob Garrett and are dated from 1836 to 1841. Two receipts for Jacob Garrett dated in 1841 and 1842 are included in these papers. Return to the Table of Contents
