Creator Sketch

Alexander Carithers, volunteer soldier, was mustered in to Company C, 2nd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, on June 20, 1846, and fought in the United States-Mexican War. He died February 25, 1847.

Scope and Content Note

The A. Carithers Papers are comprised of two letters documenting volunteer soldier A. Carithers during the U.S.-Mexican war who was stationed in Texas near the Rio Grande in the year 1846. The first is a letter dated July 28, 1846 from A. Carithers to William Harrison Athey in Putnam County, Indiana. Carithers describes his trip to Point Isabel as a member of the 2nd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, and comments on the U.S.-Mexican War. The second letter, also written by Carithers, is to Harry H. Athey of Putnam County, Indiana in which Carithers describes camp conditions along the Rio Grande and the soldier's lack of information pertaining to the war. Typed transcripts of both letters are included with these papers.
