		<head>Scope and Content Note</head>
<p>This collection contains two letters collected by R. H. Kingsbery concerning the military life of two soldiers during the Civil War. There is a Christmas day letter in 1861 addressed to all by Union soldier Ralph Chauncey of Company D. The letter is written on stationery with two large United States flags crossed with the words <emph render="doublequote">Our Heaven Born Banner</emph> beneath. The illustration was published by James Gates, Cincinnati. An 1863 letter from Simon of Falmouth, Virginia to his sister describes standing picket duty on one side of the river and the rebels on the other side, so close they could have talked together. The letter features a red, white and blue illustration of two hands clasped with <title render="doublequote">The Constitution</title> seen in the background. Also featured are an embossed United States flag and the word Union below it.</p>
