Cage Papers are comprised of correspondence, financial and legal documents dating from 1834 to 1896. Correspondence includes two letters regarding land settlements. Both letters are addressed to Cage with one dated in 1851, concerning land in Houston, Texas while the other letter is dated in 1896 and refers to a payment made for land in San Antonio, Texas. Also included is a handwritten envelope addressed to Humphrey dated 1834. Financial documents are divided into receipts and tax receipts. There are nine receipts dated from 1844 to 1894 with a majority of these being payment received of Rufus K. Cage by various individuals ranging from $1.00 to $24.00. Tax receipts include an 1848 Nacogdoches tax receipt received of Cage, a Harris County Convention Tax for 1848 and a Harris County Tax receipt received by Cage in 1871. The legal documents series is divided into affidavits and promissory notes. There are two affidavits: one signed by S.M. Baird in 1848 and a Nacogdoches 1849 affidavit signed by Rufus K. Cage certifying that he was in favor of payment proposals submitted by Charles Chevaillier. There are 24 promissory notes dating from 1834 to 1894. Return to the Table of Contents
