Creator SketchCharles Justin Wolkarte was born in 1839, probably in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, enlisting in Louisiana. Charles J. Wolkarte died in 1923 and is buried in Houston, Texas. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteLegal documents (5) written in French or English collected by C. J. Wolkarte comprise this collection. These legal documents include an insurance policy, sale of land (written in French), and a public instrument of protest noting the nonpayment of a note of Michel Batet filed with the Louisiana State Bank in New Orleans. A grant of discharge to Georges A. Memengre, corporal of the company of the Mexican War in garrison New Orleans, dated 1763, has artifactual value. The document is written in French and features a decorative border. A translation of this document from French to English is included in the collection.
