William F. Schadt PapersManuscript Collection: MC127
Creator SketchWilliam F. Schadt was born in Prussia on September 15, 1845, and came to Galveston in 1848. He and his brother Charles Schadt joined the Lone Star Rifles in 1861, later known as Company L of Hood's Texas Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia of the Confederate States of America. Charles Schadt was killed May 7, 1862, at the battle of Eltham's Landing. William Schadt was wounded in the battles of Chicamauga, The Wilderness, and Darbytown. He returned to Galveston and engaged in the lumber business, purchasing a lumber yard from W. F. Stewart ＆ Co. in 1888. William Schadt married Emma Ida Keller; they had five children, Charles, Lillian, Myrtle, Ewald, and William. William F. Schadt died October 7, 1917, and was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Galveston. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteCorrespondence, legal and printed materials, creative works and photographs document the life of William F. Schadt and his involvement with the Lone Star Rifles and Hood's Texas Brigade between 1861 and 1911. The documents are arranged according to series and then chronologically. A circa 1863 letter from John O. Scott requests information about Hood's Brigade for publication in the Galveston News. Other correspondence concerns lists of members of Hood's Texas Brigade. A June 6, 1862 pass signed by the Provost Marshal of Harris County allows C. Shadt to visit Dickinson. The handwritten minutes of the June 1, 1876 meeting of the Lone Star Rifles includes work on a muster list. Printed materials include newspaper clippings about Confederate veterans and the conduct of the Civil War, and the purchase of a lumber yard by William Schadt. A 1910 program lists the activities at the 39th annual reunion of Hood's Texas Brigade. A calling card is that of John Bellinger, a member of the Lone Star Rifles. Creative works include poetry, an acrostic, a list of 25 names, and works on the Lone Star Rifles and Hood's Brigade. Daguerreotypes of Charles Schadt and William Schadt show the uniform of the Lone Star Rifles. Of interest is a photograph of four soldiers of Company L, First Texas Brigade in front of winter quarters at Dumfries, Virginia, the winter of 1861-1862. Return to the Table of Contents
