Scope and Content Note

The Whitley Family Papers consist of materials dating from 1895 to 1983. Correspondence, Printed Materials, Creative Works, Photographic Materials, and Ephemera provide biographical and genealogical information on the Whitley family who were originally from Georgia before residing in Texas. Correspondence consists of three letters received by Mary Lillian Whitley dating from 1930 to 1983. The first is from her "daddy" dated in 1930 describing a fire and the need for her to respond quickly. The second is from Olga Whitley dated in 1979 regarding an inquiry into the Whitley family genealogy and her inability to continue researching their family history. The last correspondence is from Rayma Peck of the State of Illinois Department of Insurance regarding an existing life insurance policy. Also included in this series are two envelopes: one addressed to Mrs. R. H. Hutcheson in 1979 and another to Mrs. George Whitley in 1983.

The printed materials series is comprised of six items dating from 1895 to 1980. There is an undated colored souvenir postcard of the public square in Honey Grove, Texas, addressed to Col. J. R. Hutcheson. Also included is a wedding invitation dated in 1895 to the marriage of Annie Wright to Dr. G. M. Whitley. An envelope, which encased this invitation, is not original. A typed excerpt from the 1895 "Memoirs of Georgia Southern Historical Association" provides information on John L. Camp of Campbell County, Georgia. Another printed material is the 1923 Camp Bulletin which is a family bulletin regarding the Camp Family of Georgia, providing genealogical information and other family news. Also included is a 1961 History of Campbellton: Civil War Centennial Celebration program which provides a brief history and handwritten notes by Mary W. Hutcheson. There is a 1980 newsletter entitled Douglas County, Georgia, and Genealogy that provides information and a family portrait of John L. Camp and family.

The creative work is an undated incomplete memoir by Mary Lillian Whitley, which is entitled The Most Important Events in the Life of Mary Lillian Whitley and Some Ancestors. This memoir provides bibliographical information regarding Whitley family members beginning with her grandfather. Also included is a family record sheet which entails the dates and names of Jackson Whitley and his children. There is a 1969 manuscr8pt entitled "Family of John James Whitley and Narcissus Margaret Camp" written by Olga Rolater Whitley. This manuscript provides biographical information and references to information on members of the Whitley family.

Photographic Materials include 16 undated photographs of members of the Wright and Whitley family and a daguerreotype of an unidentified female Whitley family member. Family members with photographs in this collection are: Annie Cornelia Wright, Mary Elizabeth McClellan, Mary Lillian Whitley, Laura Wright McCarty, George Neel Whitley, Dr. J. M. Neel, and Narcissus Margaret Camp Whitley.

The ephemera series consists of a lock of G. Whitley's hair which is enclosed in an envelope.

Organized into five series; arrangement within the series is chronological.
