Creator Sketch

The Papers were located in two family Bibles that were originally loaned to the San Jacinto Museum of History in 1939 by Mrs. Rubye Weatherford of Houston, Texas. Fifteen items were removed (on two separate occasions) from an 1830s Bible [RB BS 185 1830X.P55]. Two items were removed from an 1809 Bible [RB BS 185 1809.P55] that belonged to Tom Gresham, the uncle of Rubye Weatherford's father, Joe W. Ashford.

Scope and Content Note

Correspondence, financial records, legal documents, a note, printed material, creative works, a photograph, and document fragments illustrate the family history of Rubye Weatherford. Correspondence consists of three letters written by James Goree Ashford to Willis [J. W. Gresham]; Ashford asks Gresham in both his April 2, 1910, and April 21, 1910, letters for information from Grandma's Bible and offers to care for it and "hand it down to my children". Sue Pinckney offers financial assistance to Gresham as evidenced in both a signed promissory note and a June 28, 1909, letter that details her grief over the death of her brother, former Congressman John Pinckney. The Papers also contain an undated genealogical record and photograph of Thomas Gresham.
