Scope and Content Note

Daybooks and a prescription book document the financial transactions of three businesses in Columbus, Texas, from 1854 to 1874. The daybook from the mercantile firm of Logue ＆ Whitfield (1854-1855) records the accounts of prominent Texans of the day including W. B. DeWees, Dr. Lawrence A. Washington, Dr. John G. Logue, Dr. E. P. Whitfield, J. S. Shropshire, Jones Rivers, Col. J. W. E. Wallace, Dr. John H. Bowers, R. L. Foard, Basil G. Ijams, and Robert Robson. A second daybook (1859-1861) is from an unknown general merchandise store. The prescriptions (1362-1816) in the Weller ＆ Buford, Druggists, Prescription Book (1873-1874) are hand inscribed and may contain information including the name of patients and doctors, the date, and formulations of the prescriptions. Of interest are eight printed prescription forms glued to pages at the end of the book, which are elaborately engraved with an interior view of the Weller and Buford Drug Store.
