Biographical/Historical note

The Community Artists’ Collective is a Houston-based nonprofit organization which organizes exhibitions for local artists and educational and community development programs for inner-city youths and adults. Founded in 1987 by Michelle Barnes and Dr. Sarah Trotty, the Collective was meant to serve professional artists in Houston’s African-American community, with a special emphasis on female artists. The Collective’s first exhibit, “Women of Color,” was held in Shreveport, LA, in 1987. Three more exhibits in Houston followed in 1988. In coordination with the Midtown Art Center, Kuumba House, and SHAPE Community center, the Collective also began offering art educational programs to inner-city youths. In 1989, the Collective moved into a 5000 sq. ft. space in south central Houston.

The Collective continues to support professional artists and offer educational programming to the community, including afterschool programs and Saturday workshops.
