Biographical / Historical

Dr. Richard Tapia founded RAMAS (Rice Association of Mexican-American Students) in 1972. Around 1983, when the Rice University Hispanic population began to include more than just Mexican-Americans, the group changed its name to RAMAS/HACER. In 1985, the name was shortened to HACER (Hispanic Association for Cultural Education at Rice). In the 1990s, the meaning of the acronym changed to Hispanic Association for Cultural Enrichment at Rice.

The club focuses on enriching the lives of Hispanics at the university by providing outreach activities, as well as cultural and social events. Their major yearly events are the HACER Cultural Show, Hispanic New Student Reception, and Latin Pub Night at Willy's Pub.
