Biographical/Historical note

Membership on the Rice University Studies Review Board for most of its existence consisted of faculty appointments made annually by the University President. The Board was made up of five faculty in addition to the Editor, who served as Chairman. After the Board was renamed the Rice University Press Committee in 1982, names of faculty recommended for membership were submitted by University Council to the President.

The purpose of the Rice University Studies Review Board was to oversee publication of a quarterly scholarly journal which was successor to The Rice Institute Pamphlet. The 1965 statement of the purpose of the journal—“publishing scholarly and scientific writings in all fields” by “faculty members and other persons associated with Rice University”—points out that as a continuation of the Rice Institute Pamphlet, the publication was then in its fiftieth year. Numbering of issues of Rice University Studies is continuous from the Rice Institute Pamphlet numbering, the name having been changed in 1962. Issues were to consist of “single monographs or groups of shorter papers with some unity of subject matter.” The four numbers of 1964 were in the fields of philosophy, mathematics, English literature, and German literature. Numbers in production or planned for 1965 and 1966 included the fields of English literature, French literature, philosophy, geology, and anthropology.

In 1982 Rice University Studies ceased publication, and its Review Board became the Committee on the Rice University Press with Fred R. von der Mehden as Editor. The Review Board Collection includes names of the Rice University Press Committee for 1982-83, 1983-84, 1984-85, and 1985-86.

Scope and Contents note

The collection begins with correspondence of the Rice University Studies Committee, which was renamed the Rice University Studies Review Board in 1974. It ends with lists of Board members who became members of the Rice University Press Committee in 1982 when Rice University Studies was discontinued. The contents are primarily copies of correspondence from the University President appointing faculty to the Committee or Review Board, and responses of faculty accepting these appointments.
