Historical Sketch

The Hobby Family Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1940 and located in Houston, Texas. In December of 1997, the foundation offered Rice University’s Fondren Library, $21.4 million. This financial contribution is one of the most charitable gifts to any university and aids to enhance the library’s collection through capital and programmatic purposes. The Hobby family has a long history of public service and philanthropy. William P. Hobby was Governor of Texas from 1917 to 1921. His wife Oveta Culp Hobby was the first U.S. Secretary of Health, Education & Welfare (1953-1955), first commanding officer of the Women's Army Corps, chairman of the board of the Houston Post. William P. Hobby Jr. was the president of the Houston Post for 20 years, Texas’ lieutenant governor from 1973 to 1991, and has actively served on numerous boards. William P. Hobby Jr.’s wife Diana Hobby has served as co-editor of Studies in English Literature as well as was book editor of The Houston Post.
