Biographical Sketch

Dr. Carl Ray Woodring (1919-2009), earned a B.A. from Rice University in Houston, Texas in 1940, and followed with an M.A in 1942. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1949, He was a Woodberry Professor of Literature, Emeritus, at Columbia University. He was accorded many distinctions including the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss award (1971) for his book on William Wordsworth, Politics in English Romantic Poetry, and a Ford Foundation grant for 1955-56 and a Guggenheim Fellowship for 1958-59. Considered a renowned authority on the Romantic Period in English Literature, Woodring is the author of numerous other articles and books including Nature into Art; Cultural Transformations in Nineteenth Century Britain (1989), Politics in the Poetry of Coleridge (1961), Wordsworth (1965), Table Talk of Samuel Taylor Coleridge for the Collected Coleridge, 2 vols. (1990), and (co-editor) The Columbia Anthology of British Poetry (1994).
