Biographical Note

Andrew White Tuer (1838-1900), printer, publisher and author was born in Sunderland, England, on 24 December 1838, the son of Joseph Robinson Tuer and his wife, Jane Taft. Although trained to be a physician, he showed little interest in a doctor's life and turned to publishing instead. About 1862 Tuer formed the company of Field and Tuer that later became the highly successful Leadenhall Press. Tuer was a antiquarian and avid collector and has been described as "one of the kindliest and most hospitable of men."
