In 1971, Sewall Hall was constructed making space available for a permanent art gallery at
Rice University referred to as the Sewall Gallery. Originally the gallery was managed by faculty
but soon had the benefit of a full time director. In 1994, it was renamed the Rice University
Art Gallery.
