Dr. Samuel A. Greene is largely responsible for amassing this collection
during his tenure as librarian of the Massachusetts Historical Society. He was
a Civil War veteran, and held his post with the Society from the end of the
Civil War until World War I.
The collection consists of 16 boxes of books and papers, mostly from the
1860s, all of which were readily available to the public in the Confederacy at
the time. The collection includes state and C.S.A. laws, ordinances, and
regulations, military manuals, political dissertations, school books, novels,
maps, tracts, and sermons. Also included are works related to the Confederacy
such as histories of the war and autobiographies. Most are originals, any
photocopies are noted as such in this listing.
