Guide to the Augustus Ehinger diary transcript, 1846-1847
Biographical NoteAugusts Ehinger was born in Speyer, Rhein Phlaz, Bavaria, on September 14, 1821 and came to the United States with his parents at the age of twelve. He lived in Ohio, Illinois, and Iowa where he died on January 9, 1881. Scope and ContentsThe diary of Augustus Ehinger begins June 15, 1846 and ends June 28, 1847. The diary chronicles Ehinger’s travels and experiences as a private in the Second Illinois Regiment during the Mexican-American War. Ehinger writes about simple daily activities as well as battles, marches, and other soldiers in his regiment. The location of the original diary is unknown.
