Biographical Note

Naval historian Edgar Stanton Maclay, 1863-1919, was the author of History of the United States Navy, 1775 to 1894.


Scope and Contents

Letters written by Maclay to Admiral Thomas A. Stevens mentioning his intention to write a comprehensive account of the Navy’s part in the U.S. Civil War. The letters also request the Admiral’s help in obtaining for Maclay the position of lighthouse keeper in Jefferson Harbor, Long Island, New York.
