Historical Sketch

The University Council was formed in 1971 out of a proposal made by the Committee on University Welfare. The council consists of members of the faculty, administration, and student body. The duties of the Council are to advise the President on matters of appointments, curricula modifications, degree requirements, and general plans and goals. A subcommittee of tenured members meet separately and make recommendations for tenure and promotions. Eight Faculty members of the University Council serve simultaneously on the Faculty Council also, establishing direct lines of communication between the faculty and administration. Faculty members are elected by the faculty, administrative members are appointed and student members are elected by the Student Association and Graduate Student Association.
