Doctor John McNeill was born in North Carolina and attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and The University of Pennsylvania Medical School in Philadelphia. He then moved to the Territory of Florida where he became active in politics and backed potential governors. Later Stewart moved to Brazoria County, Texas where he remained as a general practitioner for the remainder of his life. During his life he published the "Adventures of Josiah Pranglan" which seems to have represented his ancestry and to have explained his family's journey from the highlands of Scotland to North Carolina. Stewart's political opposition to Willis Alston proved fatal when Alston shot Stewart from point blank range in Brazoria. Stewart's fellow citizens demonstrated their respect and outrage concerning their neighbors' death by lynching Alston.
