		descriptive rolls recording the status (as of 1863) of soldiers serving in the
		following Missouri regiments in the Union Army during the United States Civil
		War: Missouri Infantry Volunteers, Missouri Cavalry Volunteers, Missouri
		Infantry and Cavalry Militia. </abstract>

	 <head>Historical Note</head><p>The soldiers in the regiments described in
		these rolls were among an estimated 160,000 men from Missouri who fought on the
		Union side during the United States Civil War (1861-65). Perhaps 40,000 others
		served under the secessionist Missouri State Guard and the Confederacy, but
		overlapping service occurred among the units on both sides, and an
		indeterminate number of Missourians actually served in both armies.

	 <p>The four bound manuscript volumes (measuring 15” x 17”) contain
		descriptive rolls that record the status of soldiers serving in the following
		Missouri regiments of the Union Army as of 1863: Missouri Infantry Volunteers,
		Missouri Cavalry Volunteers, and Missouri Infantry and Cavalry Militia. Ledger
		headings include name; rank; age; physical description; marital status;
		occupation; place of birth and place of residence at time of enlistment; date
		of enlistment; when, where and by whom mustered into service; remarks
		concerning present status of individual, whether mustered out, killed or died,
		discharged (including for disability), or deserted; and notes concerning
		promotions or transfers.</p>
