Historical Note

Esther Marion Nelson taught in the School of Education at the University of Houston between 1950 and her retirement in 1955. Between 1943 and 1946, she served in the Women's Army Corps (WACs), first as a public relations officer for the Army and then doing military intelligence work with the Far East Air Service Command.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection related to a study Dr. Nelson conducted about the experiences of black EACs in an Army postal unit stationed in Birmingham, England and Rouen, France. She wrote to these ex-WACs asking them about their life in the Army and race relations within the military and among the civilians they encountered overseas. She intended to publish this study, although it is unclear whether or not she did so. Some personal papers are included in the collection.
