Prominent black philanthropist Anna Johnson Dupree began life in Carthage, Texas in 1891. As a young woman, she worked as a domestic in Galveston, where her family moved in 1904, and later in Houston. In Houston she learned hairdressing, eventually building a clientele among well-to-do white Houstonians. In the 1940's, Anna and her husband, Clarence, donated funds to build the Negro Child Center. In 1952 they opened the Eliza Johnson Home for Aged Negroes. The Duprees also raised funds for Camp Robinhood, the first Girl Scout camp for blacks. They contributed funds to the Houston College of Negroes, now Texas Southern University, and the United Negro College Fund, among other charities.
