William A. Kirland served as president and later chairman of First National Bank of Houston from 1955 to 1963. His maternal great-grandfather, B. A. Shepherd, founded the bank in 1866. Kirkland chronicled the history in the book
Old Bank, New Bank: The First National Bank of Houston, 1866-1956.

Most of the documents in this collection relate to the Shepherd and A. P. Root families as well as Kirkland's research into the history of First National Bank. It also contains correspondence between Kirkland and his immediate family.

Box 3 contains the research materials of Mr. Kirkland with an emphasis on the history of Houston organizations, First National Bank and the Shepherd family.
