Biographical Note

Laurie (Ann) Lindemulder was born on January 22, 1938, to Ralph Leslie Lindemulder and Wilmine Vanderveen Lindemulder at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. She and her brother David John Lindemulder now (as of 2007) of Marin County, California, lived in Detroit until their father died on the operating table during open-heart surgery. Laurie was sixteen years old at that time and her brother eleven years. They and their mother moved back to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where her parents had originally lived.

Laurie attended the Detroit Public School System, except for three years when she attended the Grosse Pointe Christian Reformed School (grades 7 through 9). She graduated from Southeastern High School and subsequently matriculated at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She attended Calvin College through the first semester of her junior year, transferring to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She received a Bachelor of Music degree with a major in piano in 1959 and a Master of Music degree with a major in piano in 1961. Between studies for these two degrees, she taught music classes for one year at Kingswood School Cranbrook, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Following her graduation from the University of Michigan, she joined the faculty of the Detroit Institute of Musical Art. She also taught for the Detroit Community Music School. Following her marriage to Charles T. Harris, architect, she taught for Wayne County Community College. Laurie has always taught piano privately, either in her own studio or for an educational institution.

She and her husband have two children, Dr. Leslie Law Harris, a pediatrician and a neonatal intensive care specialist at Texas Children’s Hospital and Charles Jason Harris, in college in Houston as of 2007.

Laurie Lindemulder and her family moved to Houston, Texas, in 1981. Laurie has been a private piano teacher, a pianist for Theater on Wheels, a manager for Loftis Music Studio in the 1960 area at that time, and a teaching artist with the now-defunct Texas Institute for Arts in Education. She is nationally certified as a teacher of piano by the Music Teacher’s National Association, holding a Life Certification.

She studied with Gizi Szanto, concert pianist and faculty member of the Interlochen National Music Camp, Interlochen, Michigan, coached with Mary Norris, Professor of Piano, The Shepherd School, Rice University, Brian Connelly, Professor of Piano, The Shepherd School, Rice University, and with Michael Lowe, artistic director, The Houston Chamber Orchestra.

Performances include both solo, two-piano, and piano duet. Michigan, Illinois and Texas have provided venues for her concert performances. She performed two-piano and piano duets in Michigan and Illinois with Alice Ellison. Her piano duet partner in Texas, Norman Schack, and she, spent two and-a-half weeks in Paris, France, with the French Piano Institute during the summer of 1999.

She holds memberships in the following organizations: Houston Music Teacher’s Association, Texas Music Teacher’s Association, Music Teacher’s National Association, National Piano Teacher’s Guild, Houston, Tuesday Musical Club, Bayou City Federation of Music Clubs.

She has held the following board offices: For the Houston Music Teacher’s Association: First Vice-President, Programs 1994 to 1997, President-Elect 1997 to 1998, President 1998 to 2000, Immediate Past President/President, Educational Foundation 2000 to 2002. For the Cy-Fair School District Association for the Education of the Academically Talented: Founding Secretary 1983 to 1984.

Her other contributions to the Houston, Texas, community include helping to redevelop an existing piano study curriculum for Loftis Music Studios, 1988 to 1991, Co-founded Arts Always, Inc. to produce a pilot for a children’s video program, 1984 to 1988, chaired the Cultural Arts Committee for E.
