Biographical Note

Mrs. Paul B. Kennedy was long a member of the League of Women Voters and active in Democratic party politics at the precinct level in Houston. Her husband had been with the City Refuse Department for twenty years when Louise Welch became mayor in 1964. Kennedy was removed from his office when it became known that his wife worked for Welch's opponent, and that both Kennedys were critical of the Welch patronage replacements. The Kennedys took their case to the Civil Service and to the courts and eventually won, but Kennedy was given a small office with no facilities where he remained until his retirement.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged by election years and includes campaign material and newspaper accounts of issues, campaign, and results.
In addition to the political material, there is a large number of League of Women Voter pamplets on how to be active for a candidate, plus other League pamphlets. There is a collection of personal memorabilia, plus mailing lists for precinct workers. 1961 and 1962 have precinct analyses made before the computer analysis was common. A section of environmental articles concerning garbage and water supplies round out the collection.
