Scope and Contents

This collection consists primarily of the 19th century correspondence and papers of the family of A. Earl Amerman, mayor of Houston from 1918 to 1921. It includes materials concerning Augustus and Melissa Moore Amerman, Almeron F. and Mary Collings Amerman, George W. and Catherine Earl Collings and Charles Granger Collings. Some financial records of George Fisher, James Brewster and M. H. Shyrock also are available. The collection is most valuable for items relating to social and business history of Houston and for the Civil War correspondence from Charles G. Collings who served with the Confederate Army in Galveston and San Antonio from 1861 to 1864. Several interesting photographs illustrate life in early twentieth century Houston.
