Historical Note

The Dowell family included Dr. Greensville S. Dowell (1822-1881), a prominent Galveston physician who served as dean and professor of surgery at the Galveston Medical College, his first wife, Sallie White Dowell, and their two sons, Shelton and John W. Dowell. Sallie White Dowell was the half-sister of Major George Littlefield (1842-1920), who served in Terry's Texas Rangers and in 1890 organized the American National Bank of Austin.

Scope and Contents

The Dowell-Littlefield collection consists of correspondence from the Dowell family, as well as from a relative, Major George Littlefield of Gonzales. Correspondence dates back to 1868 and is mainly personal in nature.

The collection is arranged topically, according to each individual's correspondence. A chronological order is also maintained within each folder.
