Biographical Note

Frederick A. Heitmann was a prominent Houston businessman throughout the early twentieth century. The child of German immigrants, Heitmann was born in Houston in 1858. He attended schools in Houston and Colorado. After the death of his father in 1889, Heitmann became the owner of F. W. Heitmann and Company, Houston's oldest hardware store, begun in the 1860's. F. W. Heitmann and Company was incorporated in 1903, at which time F. A. Heitmann became president of the company. Heitmann was also involved in other Houston businesses, serving as senior director and vice president of South Texas Commercial National Bank and vice president of Guardian Trust Comany. He was also active in civic affairs and was a proponent for Houston's ship channel and the Houston Art Museum. Heitmann died in Houston in 1955 at the age of 96.

The collection contains 14 boxes of various materials, including correspondence, legal documents, and financial statements.

The collection is arranged topically according to business and personal types of materials. Also included in the collection are corresondence and miscellaneous materials relating to the Progresso Development Company, of which Heitmann was a stockholder.
