Biographical Note
Robert W. Kneebone (1899-1976) was involved in Houston business and civic affairs beginning in the 1930's. A 1921 graduate of the University of Michigan, Kneebone entered the banking industry in 1932. In 1950, he became vice-president of the National Bank of Commerce, later renamed the Texas Commerce Bank. His involvement in charity was varied throughout his years in Houston, but centered around two organizations, the Texas Youth Council and the United Fund. Kneebone served as chairman of the Texas Youth Council from 1957 until he resigned the post in 1973. Kneebone also served as a volunteer member of the United Fund organization and as vice-chairman and chairman of various United Fund Chest Campaigns and USO fund drives. He later served on the United Fund National Board of Directors. In 1973, he was awarded the first annual Robert Kneebone Award by the United Fund.
