Biographical Note

Adele Briscoe Looscan was born at Harrisburg but lived most of her life in Houston, Texas. Throughout her life she was active in social and literaty circles. In 1885 she helped organize the Laties' Reading Club of Houston and in subsequent years contributed articles to the Ladies' Messenger, Texas Magazine, Southwestern Quarterly, and other publications. Her writings dealt with historical topics, particularly those pertaining to early Texas. Mrs. Looscan was a registered charter member of the Texas State Historical Association in 1897 when the organization was founded. She served as president of the Association from 1915 to 1925.

Scope and Contents

The collection, consisting primarily of correspondence and clippings, deals with Adele Looscan's activities as president of the Texas Historical Association. Among the most prominent correspondents represented in the collection are Eugene C. Barker, Charles W. Ramsdell, and Ernest W. Winkler, all of whom served as officers for the Texas Historical Association during 1911-1926. None of her own letters are in the collection. The correspondence consists only of letters she recieved between 1911 and 1926. The clippings deal with historical topics and the activities of the Association. Three of the four scrapbooks deal with historical subjects, while the fourth contains material pertinent to the Looscan family.

Arrangement

The correspondence is arranged alphabetically according to author with letters from the same author arranged chronologically. Newspaper clippings are arranged alphabetically. The scrapbooks are not arranged in any particular manner. Volume six has an index compiled by Mrs. Looscan. Most of the clippings are undated. Only four of the six volumes are included in the collection.
