The Dance Club was first organized by two women; Doris Childress and Eleanor McDaniel in 1939. They promoted a first gathering in the only available dance hall in Houston at the time which was on Bissonnet St. Much to their surprise and delight, 100 people turned out for the dance. According to Ms. Childress’s recollections, the Dance Club gained such popularity in Houston for a time, that they had an entire page devoted to it in the newspaper. The Dance Club's activities were, in fact, reported in the River Oaks Times, Houston Press, the Houston Post and the Houston Chronicle; however, membership in the Club was quite exclusive. Prospective members were required to have recommendation proposals sent to the Executive Committee by sponsors who evidently could attest to their dancing acumen and standing in the community. According to the Dance Club Constitution, membership was limited to 200 members.
The Dance Club held three or four dances annually and one annual meeting in which committee members were voted into office. Once the Club was established, the dances were held at venues such as the Houston Country Club, Lakeside Country Club, and Sagewood Country Club. Later, the River Oaks Country Club became the venue for all dances. The Dance Club continued for many decades, due to the dedication and enthusiasm of its members and committees.
In 1995, it was announced that due to low membership (44 couples and 12 singles), the Club members would decide to discontinue or merge with the River Oaks Dance Club.

The Dance Club Collection is comprised of the records retained by the Club’s historian. Included are the correspondence related to membership, budget and planning, the Dance Club constitution, photographs and other media related to events and a scrapbook dedicated to reunions.

Arrangement |
|
The collection is arranged into three series: Administrative Records, Membership Directories and Media. The Administrative Records and Annual Membership Directories series both contain similar items from year-to-year and are arranged chronologically. The remaining series, Media, is primarily comprised of scrapbooks. The materials in the scrapbooks are described at the item level. |
