Patricio Gutierrez (1896-1985) was a part of the Houston music scene for most of his life. He was born in San Antonio, but moved to Houston with his family at an early age. He played piano and French horn as a member of the early Houston Symphony Orchestra, and was one of its first soloists. He played chamber music at the Brazos, Rice, and Lamar Hotels. In his youth, he was organist at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the First Presbyterian Church.

Patricio was a member of the Houston Professional Musicians Association, Local 65 for most of his life. When he joined the union in 1907, he was the youngest working member. At his death, he was its oldest member.

Patricio came from a musically talented family. His father, Jesus, was a bassist, and his brother, Fred, played violin in the Houston Symphony. His brother Joe played clarinet, and his Uncle Joe played the trombone. Patricio’s wife, Edith Gutierrez, has taught piano in Houston for many years. With his wife, he formed Greenbriar Music Studios, at 2181 Portsmouth St., where they taught music. His stepdaughter, Pauline Oliveros, is a renowned composer and accordionist.
</bioghist><scopecontent encodinganalog="520">
Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a scrapbook of Patricio’s life.
