Historical Note

Collected papers and photographs from the Public Relations Department files of Anderson Clayton and Company. The company was founded in 1904 in Oklahoma City as cotton brokers, moved to Houston in 1916 and expanded into all areas of cotton business, progressively diversifying into foods, seeds, animal feed, transportation, warehousing, insurance and equipment manufacture with associated companies in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Switzerland. It was taken over in 1986 by Quaker Oats.

Scope and Contents

There is some material on members of the Anderson Clayton families, in particular William Lockhart "Will" Clayton. Founder-partner and later chairman, he was named "Cotton's Man of the Year" in 1948 and also served the U. S. Government from 1940 for some years in various capacities including Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and was known as the father of the Marshall Plan. Monroe D. Anderson, another founding partner, is best remembered for the M. D. Anderson Foundation which benefits medical institutions.

The collection consists of a small amount of correspondence, copies of articles and speeches by senior company officials, annual reports, in-house magazines, brochures and pamphlets of the associated companies, a few early company documents, advertising material and a comprehensive set of press clippings, covering all aspects of the company's business including its final recapitalization plan and takeover by the Quaker Oats Company. Box 45 contains the papers of a cotton seminar run by the company which provides a comprehensive picture of all aspects of the cotton business from financing production to organizing distribution. There are also copies of some of W. L. Clayton's political speeches and articles together with his personal shorthand notebooks, and a political scrapbook.

The pictorial collection includes a large number of photographs of company personalities, buildings and all aspects of the growing, harvesting, processing, distribution, and advertising of cotton, oilseed, coffee and foods. There are also numerous (unprocessed) snapshots of South American scenes.

Arrangement
	The 82 boxes are arranged by type of material as follows: correspondence; articles and speeches by Will Clayton; personnel records and speeches and articles by company executives; miscellaneous materials on the history of the company; company news releases and bulletins; newspaper clippings on the company and its divisions and earnings 1934-1986; a few papers pertaining to the company's incorporation; notices of meetings, annual reports, financial declarations, stock brokers' reports, some financial reports, recapitalization plan; PR department guidebooks; legislative data and correspondence; advertising artwork; photographs- portraits, including Clayton family arranged alphabetically, company groups and activities; crop cultivation, harvesting and distribution; miscellaneous South American photos arranged similarly; slides, films and videos for publicity purposes. Within each type category, material is arranged chronologically with the exception of personnel, which is arranged alphabetically and by division.
