The Houston Music Teachers Association, Inc., (HMTA) was organized in
September 1941. They provide scholarships to young people through music
competitions and festivals and winners' recitals and aid and support winners of
competitions in the furtherance of their careers. In the 1947-48 season they
had 100 members and Carter Music Company sponsored "The Steinway Piano Contest"
for HMTA students. Fifty-four students participated and the winner's recital
was held at Carter Music Hall. This was repeated in 1949 and then Carter Music
Company withdrew. HMTA continued with the contests and and a winner's recital
is held annually.
