Historical Note

The Houston League of Women Voters has played a major role in the political activities of the city since the league evolved from the Texas Equal Suffrage Association in 1919.

The records in this collection, dating from 1935 to 1975, include correspondence, Board minutes, financial reports and program materials. The organization of this material preserves the original filing system, and is organized into 5 series: President's Files, containing correspondence and arranged chronologically; Minutes to meetings, arranged chronologically; Financial Records, arranged chronologically; Program Materials, arranged according to subject; and Scrapbooks. The papers frequently cover national, state and local issues and the researcher should check the appropriate year for topics such as legal rights of women, income tax, zoning, education, mass transit, pollution, United Nations and others.

VI. Addendum: 1993 and 1997 Additions

The 1993 and 1997 additions to the League of Women Voters of Houston Collection are centered around the activities of the activities of the group. The organization preserves the original filing system. It begins with correspondence arranged chronologically. It continues with board minutes, financial reports, league newsletters, league programs, program materials and miscellaneous items. The papers frequently cover local issues; the researcher check the appropriate year for topics. Boxes dealing with specific league programs and actions are maintained in their original donation at the time of donation.
