Historical Note

The League of Women Voters of the United States and the League of Women Voters of Houston were both established in 1920, the year that the nineteenth amendment to the Constitution of the United States gave women the right to vote. The League of Women Voters of Houston evolved from the Texas Equal Suffrage Association in 1919. The League of Women Voters is a direct descendant of the women’s suffrage movement. The League continues as "a grassroots organization working at the national, state, and local levels as a non-partisan political organization which works to promote civic responsibility through informed and active participation in government."

Scope and Content Note

The records in this collection, dating from 1935 to 1975, include correspondence, Board minutes, financial reports and program materials. The organization of this material preserves the original filing system, and is organized into 5 series: President's Files, containing correspondence and arranged chronologically; Minutes to meetings, arranged chronologically; Financial Records, arranged chronologically; Program Materials, arranged according to subject; and Scrapbooks. The papers frequently cover national, state and local issues and the researcher should check the appropriate year for topics such as legal rights of women, income tax, zoning, education, mass transit, pollution, United Nations and others.
