Preferred Citation

The Herbert Fred, MD, papers; MS 159; John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center, Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library.

Acquisition Information

Dr. Fred donated his papers to the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center in early 2013 for the purposes of preserving his contribution to medical education and the scientific record along with the other life activities that provided a foundation for his career: writing, running, religion, and family.

Processing Information

The finding aid for this collection was written in 2013. An original inventory list was created at the time of accessioning and can be found in the control folder of the collection. Dr. Fred's curriculae vitae and family geneaology are also located in the control folder. All items received standard archival processing. Paper clips, staples, rubber bands and attached handwritten notes were removed. Items were refoldered in archival folders. Handwritten notes were preserved and foldered with the original document. Newspaper clips were copied or scanned and discarded. In some instances, Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 software was used to magnify and document details from objects. Photographs and slides were not removed from the original order and were foldered as found with letters, presentations, and articles after appropriate processing for preservation. Large unique slide collections were removed from carousels and notebooks, placed in the original order in archival slide preserver sheets, and foldered in archival folders in the original grouping. Large medical certificates, awards and honors are located in oversize boxes. In some instances, framed realia was removed from the original frame to ensure preservation. Most realia has been separated to OVERSIZE and is so listed in this finding aid.

Accruals

Accruals are expected for this collection. The McGovern Research Center will acquire Dr. Fred's reprint library at his death. Additionally, Dr. Fred may add other records of his current activities.
