Biographical Note

Emmett Bartlett Cocke was born on a Gonzales County, Texas, farm on 1871 January 15, the son of James Roger and Grace Bartlett Cocke. After attending school in San Marcos, he taught school and read law. After passing the bar in 1895 he began his law career in Floresville, moving to San Antonio in 1905. Cocke worked in partnership with his cousin William A. Cocke and with Charles C. Harris before establishing a practice on his own. He maintained an office in San Antonio through about 1959.

Cocke married Bessie Hill in 1895. The couple had four children, including prominent San Antonio architect Emmett Bartlett Cocke, Jr. Cocke died in San Antonio on 1965 June 13.

Scope and Content Note

The Emmett B. Cocke papers consist of abstracts of title, deeds and other legal documents, financial documents, and correspondence dealing with property transactions in San Antonio and other locations in Texas. Included are records of transactions for which Cocke acted as legal representative and those in which he had a personal interest.

The bulk of the papers are associated with property in San Antonio and Bexar County and are arranged by site under the subdivision name, survey name, individual name, or lot number. Most of these sites are represented by abstracts of title, and some have associated legal and financial documents. The names of some of the parties to the transactions are noted in the folder descriptions for legal documents.

Transactions of property outside of Bexar County are arranged by county.

The most detailed information is related to the Los Angeles Heights subdivision in San Antonio and includes over a dozen abstracts and other legal instruments. Other lots and subdivisions are represented by one to six abstracts and associated documents.
