Biographical Note

Albert Maverick was born in San Antonio, Texas, on 1854 May 8, the youngest surviving child of Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803-1870), a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and Mary Ann Adams (1818-1898). Albert attended but was expelled from the Texas Military Institute in Bastrop and later attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he met his future wife, Jane Lewis Maury (1858-1954). Albert spent a year in England and France before marrying Jane on 1877 March 20. The couple had eleven children: Jessie (1877-1958), Agatha (1879-1954), Ellen (1881-1910), Albert, Jr. (1883-1962), Reuben (1885-1907), Phillip (1887-1977), Virginia (1889-1975), James Slayden (1890-1987), Mary (1892-1988), George Madison (1893-1980), and Fontaine Maury (1895-1954).

Relocating his family to San Antonio, Albert eventually ran the land office in the Maverick building downtown. He died on 1947 January 24 at the age of ninety-two.

Jane Maverick was long involved in San Antonio civic affairs and a charter member of the Conservation Society, Battle of Flowers Association, and other organizations. She took up painting at age sixty-five and the Art League met at her home, the Sunshine Ranch. She died on 1954 February 15 at age ninety-five.
