Biographical Note

Johann Arnold (also Johannes and later John) was born in Michelsrombach, Hesse-Kassel (now part of Germany), on 1817 March 30. He and several other settlers from Michelsrombach immigrated to Texas in 1844 on board the ship Weser as part of Henry Fisher's San Saba Colonization group. Arnold was among the colonists traveling with Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels to the new settlement of New Braunfels; he is considered a first founder of that community. First working as a stonemason, Arnold later became a merchant in New Braunfels. He also served on the New Braunfels Academy Board of Trustees between 1858 and 1860.

Arnold married Margareta Heim in Bexar County on 1845 November 16. Her father was Jacob Heim, another New Braunfels first founder. The couple had one daughter, Ida Mary (1848-1920). Arnold married Dorothea Anadetta Hohman (1834-1928) on 1850 May 5. The couple had eight children: Anna (1851-1938), Dorothea (1853-1916), Catharina Agatha Louise (1855-1926), Joseph (1856-1939), Carolina (1858-1934), Emilie (born 1859), and Josephine Bertha (1861-1964). Later records also list another child, Adolph (1867-1904). Johann Arnold died on 1861 March 23.
