Biographical Note

Charles William Lewis was born near Charlottesville, Virginia, on 1819 December 31. He graduated from the University of Virginia's school of medicine and surgery in 1846. Joining relatives in Williamson County, Texas, in 1852, Lewis continued his medical practice there. He served in a ranger company in 1860 and joined state forces during the Civil War, serving in the Galveston area.

Lewis married Martha Alexander on 1855 May 6. She was born in Washington County, Arkansas, on 1831 September 6 to parents Samuel (1804-1863) and Thurzy (1810-1889) Alexander. Her family moved to Williamson County in 1848, and her father was an early businessman in Georgetown. Charles and Martha had no children but adopted her nephew L. E. "Eddie" Alexander (1859-1941) in 1859.

Charles Lewis died in Georgetown on 1869 June 7 after a lengthy illness. Martha died in Burnet County on 1914 March 8.
