Historical Background

The Kentucky Club of Dallas was founded in June 1925 by Mrs. Tyree L. Bell, a Kentucky native. The purpose was to gather Dallas women who were of Kentucky origin. The first meeting was attended by 65 women, who gathered to meet Eliza Calvert Hall Obenchain, a Kentucky author who had moved to Dallas. The club combined social functions with fundraising to support the Pine Mountain School in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, now known as Alice Lloyd College. In its early years, the Club was considered one of the most elite social clubs in the Dallas area.

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of three scrapbooks compiled over a 60 year period to record the activities of the club, events at the Pine Mountain School (now known as Alice Lloyd College), and events and folklore of the state of Kentucky. Volumes I and II interchangeably record the history of the club written by Mrs. Tyree Bell, photographs of early members, and undated newspaper clippings concerning club events and Kentucky, Volume I also contains correspondence from Flem Sampson, a governor of Kentucky and Dan Moody, a governor of Texas. Volume II has yearbooks from the years 1927-1981. These yearbooks list members, officers, committees, and planned events for each year. Volume III records club events for the years 1983-1985 with photographs, clippings, and correspondence.
