Department of Superintendence,Fifty-Seventh Annual Meeting
Historical BackgroundThe National Education Association, of the United States, was chartered by Congress in 1857. In 1870, the National Superintendents Association was combined with it, making it the most representative educational body at that time. Headquarters for the association was established in Washington D.C. in 1917. The meeting held in Dallas, was the first meeting held west and south of Chicago since 1917. This made it more accessible to the western members of the association to attend. Scope and ContentsThe collection consist of two scrapbooks compiled to commemorate the Fifty-Seventh annual meeting of the Department of Superintendence National Education Association, which was held in Dallas in 1927. Over 10,000 educators, from every state in the union, attended the meeting. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, photographs, press releases, telegrams, letters, and programs.
