The Business and Professional Women's Club of Dallas (B&PW) was formed in 1916. The purpose was to create a forum of common interests and goals and to promote the interests of professional women. The National Federation of Business and Professional Women was formed three years later in 1919. The Dallas club joined as a local chapter. Many of the leaders in the national organization were from Dallas. Two very prominent figures were Judge Sarah T. Hughes and Dr. Minnie Maffett. The organization raises money for special projects and currently remains dedicated to excellence for women. A great deal of respect goes to the pioneers who blazed the path for all working women.

This collection contains materials from the local Dallas chapter, as well as the district, state, and national B&PW organizations. It is divided into twenty series. The first eleven of these pertain to the local chapter, including compiled histories, minutes, rosters, correspondence, financial records, awards, publications, newspaper clippings, photographs, brochures, scrapbooks, etc. Eight of the remaining nine series provide similar materials which chiefly concern the local chapter in relation to the district, state, and national organizations to which it belongs, including state and national publications. The last series contains media, mainly audio and video recordings, much of which provides oral histories and recorded meetings and special events of the local chapter. Most series are divided chronologically, with the principal exceptions of Special Projects and Media, which are divided topically. The series are:
History, Boxes 1-2, 1916-2005 (29 folders)
- Compiled histories, minutes of meetings, and reports of committees of the Dallas chapter. Similar materials may be located in the Club Activities series. Compiled histories of the state and national organizations are located in the Texas Federation and National Federation series, respectively.
Rosters, Boxes 2-3, 1930-1997 (8 folders)
Cuff Notes, Boxes 3-4, 1958-2004 (40 folders)
- Issues of Cuff Notes, the official newsletter of Dallas B&PW.
Financial Records, Box 5, 1956-1994 (13 folders)
- Audits, financial reports, budgets, and bank statements.
Club Activities, Boxes 5-7, 1930-2006 (39 folders)
- Correspondence, flyers, brochures, notes, and other materials illustrating regular club activities.
Presidents' Files, Boxes 8-9, 1980-2006 (17 folders)
- Materials retained by club presidents. Essentially similar to materials contained in the Club Activities series.
Special Projects, Boxes 9-11, chiefly 1969-2004 (63 folders)
- Club activities, some on-going, and projects of particular importance, including awards nominations, awards events, charitable trusts, and political activities. Of particular note are files on Ruth Guy, Hermine Tobolowsky, Sarah T. Hughes, and the Equal Rights Amendment.
Clippings, Box 12, 1942-1988 (37 folders)
- Newspaper and magazine clippings on B&PW, focusing chiefly on the Dallas club.
Photographs, Box 13, 1941-2005 (16 folders)
- Photographic prints of individuals and activities related to the club. Of particular note is the file on B&PW members in military service during World War II.
Minnie Maffett File, Boxes 16-17, 1930-1989 (15 folders)
- Materials concerning Minnie Maffett's life and activities, including her work in B&PW, medical work in Taiwan, women's leadership activities with regard to Germany and the United Nations, and the fellowship trust created in her honor. Of special note is the collection of her speeches, 1930-1949.
Scrapbooks, Boxes 18-19, 1950-1997 (10 scrapbooks)
- Dallas B&PW scrapbooks. Three small books are housed in two boxes. Seven large scrapbooks are shelved.
District 15, Box 14, chiefly 1966-2004 (26 folders)
- A compiled history of the District, correspondence, rosters, brochures, newsletters, and similar materials related to district activities and events.
Region 3, Box 14, 2003-2004 (1 folder)
- B&PW districts were replaced by regions. Materials are similar to those contained in the District 15 series.
Texas Federation, Box 14-15, 1930-2005 (39 folders)
- Compiled histories, a list of past presidents, correspondence, brochures, flyers, rosters, and other materials related to Texas B&PW.
Texas Woman, 20-21, 1930-1995 (41 folders)
- Issues of Texas Woman, published by Texas B&PW.
National Federation, Boxes 22-23, 1937-1987 (23 folders)
- By-Laws, compiled histories, correspondence, brochures, flyers, and other materials related to the activities of National B&PW, including a file on the international organization.
Independent Woman, Boxes 24-25, 1935-1959 (16 folders)
- Issues of the publication, Independent Woman.
National Business Woman, Boxes 26-29, 1960-1997 (34 folders)
- Issues of National Business Woman, published by National B&PW.
National Booklets, Box 30, 1951-1985 (21 folders)
- Booklets and pamphlets chiefly published by National B&PW.
Media, Box 31, 1975-1998 (18 recordings, 1 slide set, & 2 other items)
- Audio cassette recordings of interviews with past presidents, Dallas B&PW board meetings, workshops and parliamentary procedures. Video tape recordings of Dallas B&PW events, including a women's rights march and awards ceremonies. Other materials include a 16mm short animation on the Equal Rights Amendment and Texas law, a slide set on how a bill becomes a law, and a cloth banner for Dallas B&PW.
