Dallas German Ladies Aid Society Collection
Historical BackgroundThe German Ladies Aid Society (Dallas Deutschen Frauen-unterftukungs-Verein) was organized in January 1886 in St. Paul's Church in Dallas. The purpose of the Society was to care for aged and indigent German and Swiss residents in the Dallas area. They also maintained a collection of books in German. An early goal was to build a home for aged Germans, but the group deferred that plan because of constant applications for help to sick or unemployed families. The Society met at the Turner Hall in Dallas until 1918. After that time, the Society began to meet in private homes. Through investments in real estate and tocks and bonds, the society was able to provide food and housing for many in need, regardless of nationality. The society often purchased homes and rented them at a low cost to indigents and widows. By the 1950's government and large charitable organizations were in existence and the German Ladies Aid Society became less active. However, the society still made yearly donations to groups such as the Community Chest, the Red Cross, and programs for East German refugees. The Society disbanded in 1974. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe collection consists of the Society's original charter and amendment, as well as treasurer's books dated 1922 until 1960 and minute books dated 1907 through 1974. The minutes are written in German until June 1918. The rules of the Society are in Box 1, entitled Statuten de Dallas Deutschen Frauen-unterftukungs-Verein. The treasurer's books list recipients and what type of aid was received. Also included are the Society's seal embosser and some German books maintained by the group. There are also deeds and legal documents evidencing the Society's real estate transactions, and some correspondence concerning the group's activities. Return to the Table of Contents
